Inkwell Cottage, Fubrook

On the outside, this pretty cottage built from The Cotswolds’ trademark honeyed stone, complete with twin chimneys and climbing roses framing the front door, looks as though it’s as sweet on the inside as warm cherry pie. ARC, Painswick

With a commanding view of Gloucestershire’s miraculous Five Valleys, Painswick bears a notable history and heritage to match the inescapable beauty that encompasses the town. Built on the foundations of its own legendary stone, and grown from its chronicled wool trade, the characterful town takes you back to a simpler time, warmed by the narrowed streets and familiar cottages we’ve grown up to consider quintessentially British.

True to its Cotswold heritage, ARC Painswick takes the form of Cardynham house, a 15th Century Wool merchants Manor house found at the heart of the town, restored to its ancestral beauty and embellished with modern comforts to create a homely, hearty and halcyon juxtaposition of the classic and the contemporary. Architecturally arranged around the internal courtyard at the core of the estate, ARC Painswick has a tidal movement to its layout, with each room sat in harmony with the next – crafting an intimacy, friendliness and serene ambience across the manor.

Four Hundred Summers, Bibury

With walls of random tumbled limestone and an ashlar chimney that sends hail-fellow smoke signals curling above the gable roof, arriving at Four Hundred Summers has all the feeling of flapjack-scented homecoming. Vegetables turn plump in a Victorian greenhouse, yew hedging makes foliate compartments of the topiaries, and a hot tub brings Nordic clout to what is otherwise an utterly quintessential luxury Cotswolds cottage in Ablington.

Coachman’s House, Lower Oddington

The old farmhouse overlooks Lower Oddington village, which itself is steeped in history, dating back to at least Anglo-Saxon times.

The oldest part of Coachman’s House was built in the seventeenth century from local oolitic limestone, formed in the seabed 200 million years ago. More recently it has been part of the thriving farming community.

A large inglenook fireplace was exposed and carefully restored in the living area, forming the heart of the property, and providing a welcoming place to relax and unwind.

Bespoke design details include hand carved kitchen oak cabinetry by local craftsmen using techniques dating back to the stone age with an adze wood chipping tool, resulting in a completely unique finish. Handmade tiles work in harmony with the natural woodwork.
